WOUNDS OF THE SKIN

PROBLEM

A wound is a break in the external surface of the body.

CAUSE

Wounds are often caused by an accidental or intentional injury. Wound infection is usually caused by bacterial contamination of the site.

PREVENTION/CARE

A.Prevent accidental or intentional injury.

B.Immediately after injury, cleanse wound well with soap and water.

C.Remove all dirt and foreign material.

D.You may be prescribed antibiotics; if so, take all antibiotics until they are completely gone.

E.You may need a tetanus shot.

Activity: No restrictions. If infection is present, you may need to increase rest.

Diet: Eat a well-balanced diet. Drink eight to 10 glasses of water per day.
