PtEd – AMENORRHEA

AMENORRHEA

PROBLEM

For some reason that we do not fully understand, you have stopped ovulating, or putting out an egg each month, and you have stopped having periods. This is a very common problem.

CAUSE

Although the cause is usually unknown, amenorrhea is often associated with low thyroid activity; excessive exercise, such as that of an athlete or dancer; or excessive weight loss; or it may be a sign of early menopause.

PREVENTION

There is no specific prevention.

TREATMENT PLAN

Activity: If you have fewer or stop having periods, you may decrease the intensity of exercise. Take at least 2 days off each week, and decrease the amount of time during each exercise session.

Sexual activity: Although you may not be having periods, you may have a return of fertility without warning. If pregnancy is undesired, be sure to use an effective birth control prevention method to prevent unintended pregnancy.

Diet: If you have not had a period and have lost a lot of weight, increasing calories will help to start your periods again.

Medications: Your healthcare provider and you should discuss prescribing progesterone to replace what your ovaries are not making.
