III. Guidelines: Sport Eye Protection
- See Eye Injury in Sports to determine risk
- Corrective lenses needed in low risk sports
- 2 mm polycarbonate lenses in standard frames
- Athletes in moderate to high risk sports
- 3 mm polycarbonate lens
- Sturdy sports frame (ASTM F803-01 compliant)
- Athletes in hockey, football, baseball, and lacrosse
- Helmet with attached face mask in addition to above
IV. Guidelines: Work-Place Eye Protection (OSHA)
- Safety goggles with adequate vents and side shields
- Welders must use helmet with safety goggles
- Outdoor workers should use sun glasses
- Additional measures for Contact Lens use
- Indirectly vented goggles or full face respirator
- Indicated when working with caustics or chemicals
- Goggles with side shields are not adequate
- Avoid certain chemical exposures
- Acrylonitrile
- 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane
- Ethylene oxide
- Methylene chloride
- 4-4′ methylenedianiline
- Keep artificial tears readily available
- In Eye Chemical Burns, irrigate, then remove contacts
- Indirectly vented goggles or full face respirator
V. Myths: Misconceived Excuses for not using eye guards
- Experience protects me
- Prescription lenses protect me
- Eye gaurds are uncomfortable and distort vision
- Mandatory eye guard wear is not essential (Not cool)
