II. Causes: Common (represents 90% of Chronic Cough Causes)
- Upper Airway Cough Syndrome or post nasal drainage (40%)
- Asthma (24%)
- Gastroesophageal Reflux (15%)
- Bronchitis or post-Bronchitic Cough (11%)
- Chronic Bronchitis
- Tobacco abuse
- Transient airway hyperresponsiveness
- Post-viral cough
- Post-Bronchitic cough
- Bordetella pertussis infection
- Pertussis is responsible for 20% of severe cough in adults and teens >2 weeks presenting to ED
- Medication related
- ACE Inhibitors (5-20% of patients)
- Beta Blockers (less common)
III. Causes: Less Common Causes of Chronic Cough
- Congestive Heart Failure
- Cancer
- Lung disease
- Recurrent Aspiration
- Post-Cerebrovascular Accident
- Frequent Vomiting
- Alcoholism
- Pressure from an intrathoracic mass
- Thoracic aneurysm
- Thyromegaly
- Mediastinal Lymphadenopathy
- Irritation of cough receptors in ear
- Impacted cerumen or hair in ear canal
- Hair
- Ear Foreign Body in external auditory canal
- Miscellaneous causes
