Carotid Sinus Syncope

Aka: Carotid Sinus Syncope, Cardioinhibitory Syncope, Carotid Sinus Hypersensitivity

II. Epidemiology

  1. Most often occurs in patients over age 60 years

III. Category

  1. Carotid Sinus Hypersensitivity

IV. Symptoms: Provocative maneuvers

  1. Head turning
  2. Tight shirt collar
  3. Valsalva Maneuver
  4. Shaving

V. Signs

  1. Electrophysiologic evaluation normal
  2. Carotid Sinus Massage results in one of three findings
    1. Three second sinus pause
      1. Sinus Bradycardia
      2. Atrioventricular Block
    2. Hypotension without Bradycardia
    3. Syncope with normal pulse and Blood Pressure
